

It also depends on how rapidly it is lost whether it has been since few days or since weeks or months. The symptoms of unexplained loss of blood can be mild or severe depending on the amount of blood loss. Other conditions such as leukemia or blood cancer, obstruction of bowel, lung cancer, hypothermia etc all can cause loss of blood that may be difficult to detect. Certain blood disorders such as factor V deficiency, hemophilia can result into unexplained blood loss. People taking blood thinner medicines have risk of bleeding that may remain unnoticed. Tumor of kidney and bladder may also lead to loss of blood in urine. The other gastrointestinal causes for blood loss that may remain unexplained are diverticulosis, polyps, ulcerative colitis and cancer of large intestine. This type of blood loss is also referred to as occult blood loss. This may occur in various conditions such a bleeding peptic ulcer or an internal pile. For example small amount of blood may not be apparently noted in stool.

Long term small amount of bleeding may not be noticed. Such form of unexplained blood loss can occur for a long period of time leading to chronic anemia and many other manifestations. However, in some patients blood loss may be gradual which is not be easily detected. The causes of obvious blood loss are easy to determine as in case of accidents, during surgery, childbirth, heavy menstruation etc. Sometimes surgical intervention may be necessary to stop the bleeding.
